Chthonic Strumming #1

Green Gallery, Ottawa, ON — with Helen Abbot, curated by Celina Jeffery

Composition (graphic score) for double bass and viola, found object, and poetry by both artists.

This exhibition is a sonic beckoning from chthonic realms. Chthonic, derived from the Greek “khthōn”, means earth or soil, and often is associated with Ancient Greek myths of the underworld. This exhibition plays on the relationship between Donna Haraway’s re-working of the notion of chthonic in her term the Chthulucene (a turn away from the pitfalls of the Anthropocene) and writer Nathaniel Mackey’s description of a Chthonic hum (a fundamental vibrational force of the earth), and strum. In this invocation, sound and earth work together to beckon observers to dissolve and become humus; humus is not a masterful Anthropos, but is a compost ontology/existence that is made from and always returns to the mud, soil, to the underworld.

The portions of the exhibition are outgrowths of the graphic score, Chthonic Strumming #1, which was composed by Jury Kobayashi-Mackay and engraved by Helen Abbot. The audio is a recording of the score with Helen Abbot on viola and Jury Kobayashi-Mackay on double bass. The exhibition is the first of a series of Chthonic strumming graphic scores. Viewers are invited to scan the QR code next to the score to hear the chthonic call.
